Google has announced the launch of “Gemini for Education,” a new AI-powered app designed specifically for schools and now freely available to all Google Workspace for Education users, including students under 18. The move aims to integrate advanced AI tools into classrooms while prioritizing safety, privacy, and responsible use.
Built on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, Gemini for Education provides access to Google’s premium AI capabilities as a core part of Workspace for Education plans at no extra cost.
Google has emphasized robust data protections, ensuring user information is kept private and not used to train AI models. The service complies with important regulations such as FERPA and COPPA and recently earned the Common Sense Media Privacy Seal.
Key safety features for younger users include stricter content policies to avoid harmful outputs, a youth-focused onboarding experience with AI literacy resources, and an automatic “double-check response” feature that verifies fact-based answers through Google Search to encourage critical thinking.
Alongside Gemini for Education, Google is expanding free AI tools for teachers. The new Gemini in Classroom portal provides educators with over 30 AI tools to create lesson plans, generate content, and tailor learning materials. Additionally, basic access to Google Vids, an AI-powered video creation tool, is now available to all education users to help both teachers and students produce engaging videos.
School IT administrators maintain full control over access to these AI services through the Admin console, allowing them to manage permissions securely.
This announcement marks a significant step toward responsibly integrating AI into education, providing powerful tools while ensuring the safety and privacy of students and educators.
