Google Wallet Now Supports State IDs in 8 U.S. States, More Coming Soon

Google Wallet now supports storing driver’s licenses and state IDs on Android in more parts of the United States. The feature lets users add their ID to the app and use it at select TSA checkpoints and other services.

To add an ID, users open the Google Wallet app, tap “Add to Wallet,” select “Driver’s license or state ID,” and follow the instructions. This process includes taking photos of the physical card and recording a short verification video. Once approved, the ID appears in the app alongside payment cards and passes.

Where State IDs Work Today

Google Wallet currently supports IDs from:

  • Arizona (since October 2023)
  • California (since August 2024)
  • Colorado (since October 2023)
  • Georgia (since October 2023)
  • Iowa (since June 2025)
  • Maryland (since December 2022)
  • New Mexico (since December 2024)

States Coming Soon

Support is also planned for:

  • Arkansas
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico
  • West Virginia

How IDs Can Be Used

For now, digital IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in select U.S. airports. Users can either tap their phone on an NFC terminal or scan a QR code, then confirm the information being shared. Physical IDs are still required as backup.

Some companies, such as car rental services, are beginning to accept digital IDs for verification. Google is also working on expanding usage to account recovery, healthcare access, and ride-sharing platforms.

The company is developing privacy tools like “Zero-Knowledge Proof” to allow age or identity verification without exposing full personal details.

In addition to state IDs, Google Wallet also supports using a U.S. passport as a digital ID for domestic air travel.
