Google Wallet officially launched in Bangladesh on Tuesday, bringing contactless payment technology to the country for the first time.
City Bank customers can now add their Mastercard or Visa cards to Google Wallet and make payments using Google Pay. The service works by tapping Android phones at NFC-enabled payment terminals.
The digital payment system uses advanced encryption technology to protect user data. For small purchases, customers don’t need to enter a PIN, making transactions faster.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to building a future-ready digital payments ecosystem in Bangladesh,” said Mashrur Arefin, City Bank’s managing director and CEO.
Dr Ahsan H Mansur, governor of Bangladesh Bank, attended the launch event as chief guest. He welcomed Google Pay to Bangladesh and expressed hope that the country would attract more local and foreign investors.
The launch event also included Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson from the US Embassy in Dhaka and senior officials from Google, Mastercard, and Visa.
Google Pay eliminates the need to carry physical cards. Users can make payments for everything from air travel to daily purchases using their smartphones.
The service works both in Bangladesh and abroad at any location that accepts NFC payments. This gives City Bank customers access to a globally recognized payment system.
City Bank becomes the first bank in Bangladesh to offer Google Pay services to its customers.
