Google Moves Firebase Studio Toward AI Studio in Major Developer Shift

Google AI Studio

Google is making a significant change to its developer ecosystem by transitioning parts of its Firebase development experience toward Google AI Studio, as the company looks to streamline its AI-focused tools and reduce overlap between platforms.

The move comes as Google announced that Firebase Studio, its cloud-based AI development workspace, will be discontinued in March 2027. The company said the decision is part of an effort to consolidate its AI development offerings and focus on its main platforms, including Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity.

Firebase Studio was originally introduced as a full-stack, AI-powered environment designed to help developers build, test, and deploy applications using generative AI tools. It combined features like AI-assisted coding, app prototyping, and integrated backend services into a single workspace.

Now, Google is shifting the lessons learned from Firebase Studio into its core AI platforms. The company aims to bring similar agent-based development capabilities into AI Studio, which focuses more on prompt-driven workflows and rapid prototyping for AI applications.

Despite the shutdown of Firebase Studio, core Firebase services such as Cloud Firestore, Authentication, and App Hosting will continue to operate as usual. The change only affects the Studio development environment, not the broader Firebase backend ecosystem.

Developers currently using Firebase Studio are being advised to migrate their projects. Google has indicated that migration paths will lead users toward AI Studio and other supported tools, allowing them to continue building AI-powered applications with newer workflows.

The transition reflects a broader industry trend as tech companies simplify their toolchains and push deeper into AI-assisted development. By focusing on fewer, more unified platforms, Google appears to be positioning AI Studio as a central hub for building next-generation applications.
