Google has announced a major update to Google Maps, introducing new artificial intelligence features powered by Gemini. The company says it is the biggest overhaul of the app in more than a decade.
The main addition is a feature called “Ask Maps.” It allows users to ask detailed questions in everyday language and receive personalized recommendations along with a custom map.
For example, users can ask where to charge a phone without waiting in line at a café, find public tennis courts with lights at night, or ask for recommended stops on a road trip. The AI then scans Google Maps’ database of more than 300 million locations and millions of user reviews to provide tailored suggestions.
Google is also introducing Immersive Navigation, which adds richer 3D previews of routes. The feature shows buildings, terrain, and landmarks in more detail so drivers can better understand upcoming sections of their journey.
It also offers practical information such as parking locations, entrances, and route comparisons. Drivers can see trade-offs between routes, like a faster drive versus one with fewer tolls or lane changes.
The update is rolling out first in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. Immersive Navigation will expand across the U.S. and later arrive on systems such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and vehicles with Google built-in.
Google says more updates are coming soon, including desktop support for Ask Maps and wider global availability. The move is part of the company’s broader effort to integrate Gemini AI across its services.
With more than two billion monthly users, Google Maps remains one of the world’s most widely used apps. The new update aims to turn it from a simple navigation tool into an AI-powered assistant for everyday travel and local discovery.
