Squid Games Season 2 (Netflix)

Warning: Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2, Episode 3

In Squid Game season 2, viewers meet Jung-bae, played by Lee Seo-hwan, who is not only a contestant in the deadly games but also Gi-hun’s long-lost friend.

Jung-bae’s appearance raises questions about his past with the protagonist and his role in the current events.

Jung-bae’s History With Gi-hun

Jung-bae first appeared in Squid Game season 1, where he was shown as a friend of Gi-hun. Both struggled with gambling, often betting their money at the racetrack. In season 1, Jung-bae was seen with Gi-hun when loan sharks came to collect his debts.

Later, Gi-hun met him again at his pub, but their conversation was cut short by his wife. After Gi-hun’s traumatic experience in the games, he never saw Jung-bae again.

Jung-bae’s Return in Season 2

In season 2, Gi-hun is back in the games, hoping to shut them down for good. To his surprise, he runs into Jung-bae just before the first “Red Light, Green Light” game begins.

Jung-bae reveals that he is going through tough times, having divorced his wife and lost his family. Like many other contestants, he is drowning in debt, hoping that the prize money will help him start over.

Why Jung-bae Joins the Games

Jung-bae joins the games driven by financial desperation, much like Gi-hun in season 1. His gambling addiction has ruined his life, leading to his divorce and separation from his son.

He hopes to win the games and use the prize money to pay off his debts and rebuild his life.

Jung-bae’s Role in Season 2

Jung-bae’s return adds emotional depth to the story. He and Gi-hun share a history, which makes Gi-hun more protective of him during the games.

Gi-hun’s desire to help Jung-bae reflects his own need for redemption after the horrors of the first season.

Is Lee Seo-hwan the Same Actor From Season 1?

Yes, Lee Seo-hwan plays Jung-bae in both seasons. He has a long career in K-dramas and films, including Pachinko and Vigilante. In season 1, his role was minor, but in season 2, he takes on a larger, more important role as a key player in the games.

Jung-bae’s return in Squid Game season 2 brings more personal stakes to Gi-hun’s journey, highlighting his desire to protect those he cares about while confronting his own past.
