Google is preparing its Gemini AI assistant for its “agentic” era, where it can take action inside apps.
A new API in Android 16 called “app functions” suggests Gemini may soon handle tasks like ordering food directly through apps, without needing to open them first.
This feature is similar to Apple’s upcoming update in iOS 18, where Siri will gain the ability to perform actions in apps, like ordering food.
Although Gemini currently only accesses data from apps like Gmail and Maps, this new feature could make it a much more proactive assistant.
Both Google and Apple seem to be paving the way for smarter assistants in 2025.
