Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge whose courtroom compassion made him famous worldwide, died Wednesday at the age of 88. His family said he passed away peacefully after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Caprio served as chief judge of the Providence Municipal Court from 1985 to 2023. He gained international recognition through the television show Caught in Providence, where clips of his kind and humorous rulings went viral on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Viewers around the world called him “the world’s nicest judge.”

He announced his cancer diagnosis in December 2023 and underwent treatment in 2024. Earlier this week, he posted a video saying his health had worsened.

Caprio was born in Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood to Italian-American parents. In his youth, he worked as a shoe-shiner and newspaper delivery boy. He later graduated from Providence College and earned a law degree from Suffolk University while teaching high school. He also served on the Providence City Council and in the Rhode Island Army National Guard before his nearly four decades as a judge.

Beyond the courtroom, Caprio established scholarships to support students, including the Antonio “Tup” Caprio Scholarship at Suffolk University School of Law, named after his father. In 2023, the Providence City Council honored him by renaming his courtroom the “Chief Judge Frank Caprio Courtroom.”

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called Caprio a “Rhode Island treasure” and ordered state flags to fly at half-staff. “He showed what is possible when justice is tempered with humanity,” McKee said.

Caprio is survived by his wife Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His family said his greatest legacy is the compassion he inspired in others.
