France to Recognize Palestine at UN, UK and Canada May Follow with Conditions

UK Canada France

France has announced it will formally recognize Palestine as a state during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This makes France the first G7 country to take this step. The UK and Canada have also shown interest in recognizing Palestine, but with specific conditions.

The UK’s decision depends on whether Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza. If not, the UK may go ahead with recognition. Canada’s recognition is linked to internal Palestinian reforms. It wants the Palestinian Authority to hold elections, excluding Hamas, by 2026 and to agree to a demilitarized state.

Germany has taken a different position. It has not committed to recognizing Palestine and continues to support a negotiated two-state solution. Germany remains one of Israel’s closest allies and does not plan to change its stance in the near future.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized France’s move. He called it a “reward for terror” and said it could harm ongoing ceasefire talks. Israel’s Foreign Ministry also spoke out against Canada’s potential recognition, saying it could damage efforts to secure a truce and the release of hostages. Similar concerns have been raised about the UK’s stance.

Meanwhile, claims have surfaced online that Israel may stop visiting France, the UK, and Canada in response. However, these reports come from social media posts and are not backed by any official Israeli statement. If such a boycott happens, it would likely involve only government visits, not travel by individuals. For now, the claim remains unconfirmed.

The move by France and possible actions by the UK and Canada show growing frustration with Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Since October 2023, the conflict has reportedly led to over 60,000 Palestinian deaths.

While recognition of Palestine is largely symbolic—since it lacks clear borders, a capital, or military—these actions put additional pressure on Israel and the United States, which still opposes unilateral recognition.

In summary, France is moving ahead with Palestinian recognition, while the UK and Canada may follow under specific conditions. Germany stands by a negotiated peace process. And claims of an Israeli boycott remain unverified.
