Florence Pugh is stepping into the spotlight with Thunderbolts, Marvel’s latest superhero film. But she hasn’t forgotten the woman who helped her get there—Scarlett Johansson.

Pugh plays Yelena Belova, the younger sister of Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), who was portrayed by Johansson. In a recent interview, Pugh said Johansson personally invited her into the Marvel world.

“My whole Marvel adventure began because Scarlett trusted me enough to bring me into her film, that still means a lot,” Pugh told The Hollywood Reporter.

Pugh and Johansson first appeared together in Black Widow. Fans saw it as a “passing of the torch.” Their characters fought side by side and shared an emotional bond.

Now in Thunderbolts, Pugh leads a darker Marvel team that includes antiheroes like the Winter Soldier and Red Guardian. But even as she moves forward, she says Johansson’s absence is still deeply felt.

“It was really special that my first time in this universe was also Scarlett’s last,” Pugh said. “I honestly hope she’s proud.”

Pugh’s words remind fans that behind the action and special effects, Marvel stories are built on real friendships and respect. She is not trying to replace Johansson—she is continuing what Johansson started.

As Marvel begins a new chapter, Pugh honors the past while making her own mark.
