Netflix is building anticipation for what appears to be the imminent release of the first trailer for Stranger Things season 5, the final installment of its most popular original series.
Fan speculation intensified after the official Stranger Things Instagram broadcast channel posted two cryptic messages this week, ending an 18-month silence. The first message on Friday simply read “scanning for signal,” followed by another on Monday stating “Signal detected: locking in at 7-1-6.”
Fans believe “7-1-6” refers to July 16 in the US date format, suggesting a trailer will be released on Wednesday. The timing would make sense as Netflix typically uses such coded messages to build excitement before major announcements.
The trailer release speculation has gained momentum across social media platforms, with devoted fans analyzing every detail on Reddit and other forums. Some believe the trailer could arrive as early as today (July 15), marking the nine-year anniversary of the show’s original debut.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Netflix’s South African PR division reportedly liked a fan Instagram post suggesting a July 15 release date, though this could be coincidental.
Netflix has already confirmed that Stranger Things season 5 will be the series’ final season, with official release dates announced at the company’s Tudum event in May 2025. However, the streaming service has not yet released any extended footage from the upcoming season.
The series, which follows a group of friends in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, as they battle supernatural forces, has become one of Netflix’s biggest hits since its 2016 debut.
Netflix has not responded to requests for comment about the teaser campaign.
Given the significant build-up and fan expectations, industry observers believe a trailer release is highly likely within the next 48 hours.
