A foreign hacker reportedly breached a server at the Federal Bureau of Investigation that held files related to Jeffrey Epstein. The incident happened in February 2023 at the bureau’s New York field office.
According to documents from the United States Department of Justice and sources familiar with the case, the hacker accessed a server used by a child exploitation forensic lab. The breach was discovered the day after it occurred.
The FBI later described the situation as an “isolated cyber incident.” Officials said they blocked the attacker and fixed the network problem, but the investigation into the breach is still ongoing.
Reports say the server became vulnerable after an agent accidentally left it exposed while handling digital evidence. The hacker reportedly searched through files connected to the Epstein investigation.
It remains unclear exactly which documents were accessed or whether any data was downloaded. Authorities also do not know the hacker’s identity or where they were operating from.
One unusual detail from the report says the hacker left a message after finding illegal images on the server. The person reportedly believed the files belonged to a criminal and threatened to report them to authorities.
Officials then convinced the hacker they were actually speaking to the FBI. Agents reportedly showed their credentials during a video call to prove it.
The breach highlights how sensitive Epstein-related files remain years after his death. The case continues to draw global attention because of Epstein’s connections to powerful figures in politics, business, and entertainment.
