Ex-Olympic Coach Faces Court on Multiple Child Sex Offence Charges

Jose Vicente Leiva-Modahl

Former British Olympic athletics coach Jose Vicente Leiva-Modahl has been charged with multiple child sex offences, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed on Tuesday.

The 65-year-old, husband of former Olympic middle-distance runner Diane Modahl, is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court to face 19 charges, including sexual assault of a child, rape, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

All offences are alleged to have occurred between 2012 and 2024 and involve the same woman, according to the CPS.

The charges follow an investigation by Greater Manchester Police into Leiva-Modahl, who is also known as Vicente Modahl and coached his wife to Commonwealth Games success.

Deputy chief crown prosecutor James Bolton-Smith said:

“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings. We have worked closely with Greater Manchester Police as they carried out their investigation.”

Leiva-Modahl’s court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, where he will formally face the allegations.
