Doctor Explains Signs of Dangerous Skin Cancer Following Brandon Blackstock’s Passing

Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock

Brandon Blackstock, former husband of singer Kelly Clarkson, died on August 7 at age 48 from melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. He was diagnosed with the illness three years ago.

The Silver Bow County coroner confirmed melanoma as the cause of death. Blackstock battled cancer bravely and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

Melanoma is known as the deadliest skin cancer because it can spread quickly to other parts of the body if not treated early. Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil said melanoma cells travel through the bloodstream and lymph system, making early detection vital.

Signs of melanoma include new or changing moles, irregular shapes, uneven colors, and sizes larger than a pencil eraser. Doctors advise checking for the “ABCDE” signs: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color changes, Diameter over 6 mm, and Evolution of the mole.

People with fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, previous skin cancers, or frequent sun exposure have a higher risk of melanoma.

Kelly Clarkson recently postponed tour dates to focus on her children after Blackstock’s illness.

If you have concerns about skin changes, it is important to see a doctor early. Support is available through the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
