Disney and OpenAI in Talks to Bring AI to Movies, Streaming, and Theme Parks

Disney is in early discussions with OpenAI to explore how artificial intelligence could power the next generation of entertainment.

The potential partnership would bring AI into key areas of Disney’s empire, including content creation, theme park experiences, and streaming services like Disney+.

This move shows Disney’s two-sided strategy: protecting its iconic characters through lawsuits, while also exploring legal, licensed ways to use AI to enhance storytelling and operations.

Most recently, Disney filed a lawsuit against Midjourney, claiming the company used copyrighted Disney material without permission to train its AI.

In contrast, Disney’s talks with OpenAI are focused on collaboration. If the deal moves forward, AI could be used to:

  • Speed up animation production for studios like Pixar
  • Help write or refine scripts for Marvel films
  • Personalize show and movie recommendations on Disney+
  • Create smarter, more lifelike character interactions in theme parks

Imagine Elsa, Iron Man, or Yoda holding real-time conversations with guests based on their interests—AI could make that possible.

However, Disney is being cautious. It wants to make sure its most valuable properties—like Star Wars, Marvel, and Mickey Mouse—are protected. Executives say any use of AI must respect the company’s intellectual property and creative values.

For OpenAI, teaming up with Disney would be a major milestone, providing access to one of the world’s richest archives of creative content. It could set a new standard for how AI companies and entertainment giants work together.

This potential partnership reflects a broader trend: as AI grows more powerful, entertainment companies are seeking ways to use it safely and creatively—without losing control of what makes their brands special.
