David Corenswet, the new face of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film, said he reached out to previous Superman actors Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin for advice—but both declined to offer any tips.
Speaking to Heart at the London premiere of Superman, Corenswet shared that although Cavill (Man of Steel) and Hoechlin (Superman & Lois) were supportive, they felt it wasn’t their place to guide his performance.
“Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try and give you any tips,’” Corenswet said. “And I think that’s a very Superman thing. Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
He added that the former stars encouraged him to enjoy the role. “They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of ‘have fun with it,’ which I think is Superman’s way of doing it too,” he said.
Superman, which hits theaters on July 11, stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
During the event, director James Gunn also hinted at a possible lead for a new Wonder Woman film currently in development. He mentioned Hit Man actress Adria Arjona as one of his top choices for the role but clarified that no official casting has been made.
“She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way,” Gunn noted, addressing online speculation after he followed Arjona on Instagram.
