Creative Writer Declines Graduate Program, Citing AI’s Impact on Industry

A promising writer has made the difficult choice to decline admission to the University of Sydney’s renowned creative writing graduate program, citing concerns about the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the writing and publishing industries.

The writer, who received acceptance in early 2024, described the decision as “heart-wrenching,” after realizing that AI tools like ChatGPT are rapidly transforming the landscape for writers and authors.

“I love language more than gardeners love dirt,” the writer said, recalling a lifelong passion for storytelling inspired by authors like Francine Pascal and Danielle Steel. However, with AI’s increasing ability to generate vast quantities of written content, the traditional market for human writers is under pressure.

“I pictured myself two years later, with my degree in hand, querying agents while thousands of AI-written books filled bookstores,” she said. “The thought of being obsolete scared me stiff.”

She noted that many media outlets have already reduced their editorial staff as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, and the book industry is flooded with AI-produced ebooks, challenging human authors’ prospects.

Despite acknowledging that MFA programs focus on art and creative refinement beyond job prospects, she questioned whether the investment of time and money would pay off in the current environment.

Since declining the program, the writer has pursued freelance storytelling and engaged with writing communities dedicated to authentic human narratives. While she sometimes wonders about the academic experience she missed, she is committed to reinventing her approach to writing amid the industry’s shift.

The writer’s experience highlights the anxiety many creatives face as AI reshapes the future of artistic professions.
