CHP to Guard Kamala Harris After Trump Ends Secret Service Detail

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris will receive security protection from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service detail, state officials confirmed on Friday.

The move comes after Trump signed a memorandum ending Harris’ federal protection as of Monday, reversing an order signed by President Joe Biden that had extended her security coverage until July 2026. Without that order, Harris’ protection would have expired last month.

Former vice presidents usually receive Secret Service security for six months after leaving office, while ex-presidents are granted lifetime protection. Harris, the first Black woman to serve as vice president, had been considered at elevated risk during her political career, particularly during her 2024 presidential campaign.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass coordinated the state-level plan, as Harris resides in Los Angeles. Bass called the revocation “another act of revenge,” adding that it “puts the former Vice President in danger.” Newsom’s office declined to confirm specific details, saying security should not be subject to “vindictive political impulses.”

The CHP, Los Angeles Police Department, and the Secret Service declined to discuss deployment numbers or operational details. It remains unclear how long the CHP will provide protection.

The decision comes as Harris prepares to launch a 15-stop international book tour for her memoir 107 Days, which begins next month with events in cities including London and Toronto.

Trump has previously ended extended Secret Service protection for several figures, including former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Earlier this year, he also revoked coverage for President Biden’s children, Hunter and Ashley.

Harris’ predecessor, former Vice President Mike Pence, did not receive extended protection beyond the standard six months.
