BYD Could Join Formula 1 as Chinese Carmaker Targets Global Racing Stage

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is reportedly exploring a move into top-level motorsport. The company is considering joining the Formula One championship or the FIA World Endurance Championship, according to reports published on March 10, 2026.

Sources say BYD is reviewing several options. These include launching its own Formula 1 team or buying an existing one. Another option is entering endurance racing, which includes the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.

If the plan moves forward, it would mark a rare step for a Chinese carmaker. Motorsport at this level has long been dominated by European and American brands such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.

Industry observers say the move could help boost BYD’s global image. The company already dominates the EV and hybrid market but wants to grow its presence in premium performance cars.

BYD has recently pushed into the high-end segment through brands like Yangwang. The company showcased performance models such as the Yangwang U9 supercar, designed for extreme speed and track performance.

The timing may also be strategic. Formula 1 will introduce new engine rules in 2026 that increase electrification and sustainable fuel use. This could suit BYD’s expertise in battery technology, including its Blade Battery system.

Motorsport is often used by car brands to strengthen prestige and marketing. The rising global popularity of F1, boosted by shows like Formula 1: Drive to Survive, makes the championship attractive for companies seeking worldwide exposure.

BYD has not confirmed the plans publicly. Even so, the exploration shows how Chinese EV leaders are pushing beyond mass-market sales and aiming for premium global recognition.
