Apple TV+ is about to premiere its latest sci-fi series, Murderbot, starring Alexander Skarsgård as an android who’d rather stream TV soap operas than fight. Based on Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries, the show follows a robot who has to navigate the human world while battling its own existential questions.

The first reviews are in, and Murderbot is already a hit. With 15 critic reviews so far, it holds a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise Skarsgård’s performance as the show’s core strength, noting that his portrayal of Murderbot makes the android surprisingly funny and relatable.

While some critics mention that the show’s pacing can be uneven, they agree that the foundation is strong for future seasons. Reviews highlight the show’s mix of humor, awkward social interactions, and a journey of self-discovery, which feels more like a high school drama than a traditional space opera.

The Verge describes Murderbot’s journey toward self-awareness as both “hilarious and relatable,” while The Hollywood Reporter focuses on how the show builds affection for its title character. Inverse likens it to “R2-D2 with a backtalking attitude” but with Skarsgård’s charm.

If you’re into sci-fi with a mix of humor and heart, Murderbot is shaping up to be a must-watch. The show premieres on May 16, 2025, exclusively on Apple TV+.
