The blockbuster movie Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t originally plan to introduce Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men the way fans saw on screen. According to director Jon Watts, fan theories and art posted on Reddit convinced him to rethink a now-iconic moment.
The Original Plan Matched Fan Expectations
While filming, Jon Watts and his team first planned for both older Spider-Men to appear during a sad rooftop scene. The idea was that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, mourning Aunt May’s death, would watch as Doctor Strange’s portals opened and Garfield and Maguire stepped out to join him.
Reddit Changed Everything
Before finalizing the script, Watts looked at Reddit and saw that fans had predicted this exact scene, even making detailed fan art. “If that’s exactly what everyone thinks we’re going to do, we absolutely can’t do that,” Watts said in a recent interview.
How the Scene Changed
To surprise fans, Watts decided to mix things up. Instead of the rooftop reveal, Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men enter the story in Ned’s grandmother’s house in Queens. Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, uses Doctor Strange’s magic sling ring to call them in. The film’s funny and unexpected setting gave audiences something fresh—no one predicted the web-slingers would first show up in a family kitchen.
Outsmarting Audience Expectations
Watts explained, “What does no one expect that we’re going to do? What’s something that no one’s going to see coming? Probably having the two Spider-Men appear at Ned’s Filipino grandma’s house in Queens.” The change made the reunion even more memorable, with the addition of Ned’s grandmother played by Mary Rivera.
A Memorable Surprise
By listening to online fan theories and art, the filmmakers gave viewers a scene they could not predict. The twist helped make Spider-Man: No Way Home’s big moment stand out and delivered a fan-favorite surprise in a brand-new way.
