The United States has ranked #1 in the 2025 Global Firepower Index, leading a list of 145 countries with a Power Index (PwrIndx) score of 0.0744. In this ranking system, a lower score means greater military strength.

The U.S. military has about 1.33 million active-duty personnel and nearly 790,000 reserve and National Guard members, bringing the total to around 2.1 million troops.

America’s top position comes from a powerful combination of advanced technology, strong alliances, large budgets, and global influence. Its unmatched conventional war power is supported by massive manpower, financial strength, and industrial production.

The United States has held the number one spot consistently since 2005, staying ahead of other global powers like Russia and China, who ranked second and third in 2025.

The Global Firepower Index uses over 60 factors to measure a country’s military strength, including equipment, manpower, logistics, geography, and defense spending. It provides one of the most detailed pictures of global military power today.
