Alysa Liu has won Olympic gold in women’s figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics, completing one of the most remarkable comebacks in the sport. The 20-year-old delivered a stunning free skate in Milan, finishing with 226.79 points to secure first place.

Liu performed with confidence and joy, smiling and waving to her family during the routine. She later said she wanted to put on a show for her loved ones. Her relaxed mindset helped her stay calm under pressure on the biggest stage.

Her victory is historic. She became the first American woman to win Olympic figure skating gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002, ending a 24-year drought for the United States.

What makes Liu’s win even more powerful is her journey. After finishing sixth at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, she felt burned out and shockingly retired from skating at just 16 years old. She spent two years away from competition, focusing on her personal life and studying psychology.

When she returned, Liu did things differently. She trained on her own terms and focused on enjoying skating instead of chasing medals. That fresh mindset helped her rediscover her passion for the sport.

Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto won silver, while Ami Nakai took bronze. But the night belonged to Liu, whose comeback inspired fans around the world.

Liu said she hopes her story can inspire others and raise awareness about mental health. Her journey from burnout to Olympic champion has made her one of the most inspiring athletes of the Games.
