A new trend called “Italian brainrot” is popular with children. It started online but is now in real-world play.
The trend features AI-generated characters. Some examples are a three-legged shark in sneakers and Ballerina Cappuccina, a ballerina with a coffee mug for a head.
Italian brainrot began in Italy in early 2025. It spread quickly to international audiences. Kids use AI tools to make and share their own versions.
The humor is absurd and nonsense-based. Experts say it acts as a “secret code” for children. Parents often do not understand it.
Roblox hosts a game called “Steal a Brainrot.” Players collect AI characters and can steal them from others. The game drew nearly 24 million players in one day.
Kids also play with brainrots offline. They use leaves, acorns, and toys to create characters. They race and compete to steal each other’s creations.
Experts say this play is normal. Dr. Michael Glazier of Bluebird Kids Health says it helps children learn social skills, creativity, and problem-solving. Online content shapes play but is not harmful.
