A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms breaks several long-standing Game of Thrones traditions, including when episodes air, how long they are, and how many episodes are in the season.
The HBO prequel is set about 90 years before Game of Thrones and follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Egg. Compared to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the series is smaller in scale, lighter in tone, and more comedic.
What Time Episodes Release
New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms air on Sunday nights at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Episodes also release on HBO Max at the same time.
This is later than the usual 9pm slot used by Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The change is due to Industry Season 4 occupying the 9pm time slot.
Episode Runtime Is Much Shorter
Episodes are significantly shorter than other shows in the franchise.
- Episode 1 runs 42 minutes
- All remaining episodes range from 31 to 37 minutes
By comparison, most Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon episodes were typically 55–60 minutes long.
Total Episode Count and Finale Date
The first season consists of six episodes, making it the shortest season in the Game of Thrones franchise.
For comparison:
- Most Game of Thrones seasons had 10 episodes
- Season 7 had 7 episodes
- Season 8 had 6 episodes
- House of the Dragon Season 1 had 10 episodes, and Season 2 had 8
The shorter season is due to the source material being a novella, not a full-length novel.
