Huawei Cangjie Programming Language

Chinese tech giant Huawei has introduced its own programming language, Cangjie, at the HDC 2024 developer conference. Named after a figure from Chinese mythology, Cangjie is positioned as a next-generation language for all-scenario intelligent applications.

Huawei claims Cangjie offers “native intelligence, natural all-scenario capabilities, high performance, and strong security.” The language is designed to integrate seamlessly with Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem.

Key features of Cangjie include:

  1. Native Intelligence: An built-in AgentDSL framework that combines natural language with programming language, enabling multi-agent collaboration.
  2. All-Scenario Capabilities: A lightweight, scalable design supporting various development scenarios.
  3. High Performance: A new garbage collection system and lightweight threads for improved responsiveness and concurrent performance.
  4. Strong Security: Security features integrated into the language design to help developers avoid vulnerabilities.

Cangjie supports multiple programming paradigms and includes modern features like type inference, generics, and pattern matching. It also offers a static-type system, automatic memory management, and runtime checks for enhanced safety.

The language utilizes lightweight user-mode threads and concurrent object libraries to address concurrency challenges. Huawei has optimized Cangjie’s compiler and runtime for efficiency and provides a comprehensive development toolchain.

Developers can now sign up for the Huawei Hongmeng HarmonyOS NEXT Cangjie language developer preview to explore this new programming environment.

This development marks another step in Huawei’s efforts to create a self-reliant technological ecosystem. The long-term impact of Cangjie on the programming landscape and Huawei’s tech independence remains to be seen.
