Spotify to Add Chat Function to Jams Collaborative Playlists

Spotify Chat Concept by Kaan Altuntas

Spotify’s popular Jams feature, which allows Premium users to create shared playlists with friends, is getting a major upgrade. The music streaming giant is working on integrating a new chat function directly into Jams sessions, according to recent code findings by app researchers.

The unreleased chat feature, codenamed “campfire,” suggests Spotify envisions Jams as virtual campfires where users can gather, listen to music together, and discuss it in real-time. Currently, users have to switch between apps to communicate while collaboratively listening, disrupting the shared experience.

By adding a chat, Spotify hopes to foster a more seamless social experience around Jams playlists. Users will be able to instantly comment on songs, point out favorite moments, and exchange thoughts without leaving the app.

Envision jamming with friends remotely and being able to directly react to killer guitar riffs or lyrical highlights. While the chat integration could significantly enhance Jams’ interactivity, there are potential challenges to address.

Cluttered interfaces, especially on mobile, and managing chat etiquette within group sessions are aspects Spotify will likely need to carefully consider. There are no details yet on when the “campfire” chat may roll out publicly or what functionality it will offer. However, its existence in the app’s code confirms Spotify’s ambitions to turn Jams into richer shared music experiences by combining real-time listening with real-time discussion.

As music streaming becomes increasingly social, adding integrated chat could give Spotify’s Jams a competitive edge over similar offerings from rivals like Apple Music.

For music fans, it presents an exciting step towards making collaborative listening feel like an actual shared event.
