Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the United States Government over tariffs that were imposed during the presidency of Donald Trump.
The case was filed on March 6, 2026 in the United States Court of International Trade. Nintendo says it paid import duties on products like the Nintendo Switch, games, and components that were later ruled unlawful. The company is now asking the government to refund the money with interest.
The tariffs were introduced using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which the Trump administration used in 2025 to impose emergency trade duties on imports from several countries, including Japan.
However, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in February 2026 that the law could not be used to create such broad tariffs. The decision effectively invalidated many of the duties that companies had already paid.
Nintendo says those tariffs caused significant financial harm. The company claims the extra costs affected pricing and supply decisions for its products in the U.S., including older Switch models and upcoming hardware plans.
The lawsuit names several federal agencies as defendants. These include the United States Department of the Treasury, United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Department of Commerce, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
Nintendo is asking the court for a full refund of the tariffs it paid, along with interest and legal costs. The company argues that the duties were collected illegally after the Supreme Court ruled the tariff program exceeded presidential authority.
The case is one of several legal challenges filed by companies that paid the tariffs. Officials have said a formal refund process could begin within weeks, but trade cases like this often take time to resolve.
