YouTube has upgraded its Premium Lite plan, adding two features that make the cheaper subscription more attractive.
Previously, Premium Lite offered “most videos” ad-free. Now, users can also enjoy background play and downloads for most videos. This lets viewers listen or watch content offline and keep videos playing while using other apps.
The new features are rolling out in the coming weeks to all regions where Premium Lite is available. However, YouTube notes that these benefits apply mainly to non-music content and do not include Shorts. Ads may still appear when browsing or searching.
Premium Lite remains cheaper than full YouTube Premium, but these added features narrow the gap, making it more appealing for casual users who want a smoother ad-free experience without the full cost.
YouTube first relaunched Premium Lite in March 2025, and this update is the most significant improvement since its launch.
The move is expected to attract more users who want core Premium benefits—like offline viewing and background play—without paying the full subscription price.
No further changes to pricing or additional features have been announced yet, but users can expect the rollout to continue over the next few weeks.
