The girlfriend of actor Eric Dane has paid tribute following his death at the age of 53 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane had publicly announced his ALS diagnosis last year. His family confirmed he passed away on Thursday, February 19.
Janell Shirtcliff, Dane’s girlfriend, shared a series of memories on her Instagram, including photos of the couple together. Sources said Dane asked her to be by his side during his illness, and she wanted to support him through it.
Dane had been married to Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he had two children. They married in 2004 and filed for divorce in 2018, though the divorce was called off in March last year. Gayheart spoke about their relationship, describing it as “super complicated” but highlighting that they remained close co-parents and friends.
Before his death, Dane became a vocal advocate for ALS awareness and research. He first noticed weakness in one hand, which led to his diagnosis nine months later. By mid-2025, the disease had progressed, affecting both arms.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” his family said in a statement.
Shirtcliff, Gayheart, and Dane’s family have asked for privacy during this difficult time as they remember the actor, who was also known for his gratitude toward his fans.
Eric Dane’s legacy includes both his acting career and his dedication to raising awareness for ALS, leaving a lasting impact on family, friends, and supporters.
