Actor Eric Dane has died at the age of 53 following a year-long battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Dane was best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed McSteamy, on Grey’s Anatomy, and as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria. He also appeared in Charmed, Marley & Me, Saved by the Bell, and The Wonder Years.
After being diagnosed with ALS last year, Dane’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, withdrew a divorce filing she had made in 2018. The decision came after Dane went public with his diagnosis.
Gayheart told the Broad Ideas podcast that she wanted to show their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, the importance of supporting family during tough times. “We show up for people no matter what. He is our family. He is your father,” she said.
Fans and friends have praised Gayheart for her decision. Many took to social media to commend her loyalty and compassion, noting that she put differences aside to support Dane through his illness.
The family shared a statement after Dane’s passing: “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters… Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.”
