The film Sinners has set a new record at the Academy Awards, earning 16 Oscar nominations and becoming the most-nominated movie in Oscars history.
The film broke a 75-year-old record previously held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land, which each received 14 nominations. Sinners secured major nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
One Battle After Another followed closely with 13 nominations, making it the second most-nominated film this year. Other strong contenders included Frankenstein, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value, which earned nine nominations each.
The Best Picture category includes Sinners, One Battle After Another, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, Train Dreams and Bugonia.
Several surprises emerged from the nominations. Racing drama F1 earned a Best Picture nod despite low expectations, while Wicked: For Good failed to receive any nominations, despite strong early awards-season attention.
In the acting categories, Kate Hudson earned a surprise Best Actress nomination for Song Sung Blue, while Elle Fanning received an unexpected Best Supporting Actress nomination for Sentimental Value. Ariana Grande, widely viewed as a contender for Wicked: For Good, was left out.
Delroy Lindo’s Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sinners also stood out, as he had not been nominated at other major awards shows this season. Meanwhile, Paul Mescal was passed over for his role in Hamnet.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on 15 March. The event will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu, with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host.
