A US military aircraft known as the “Doomsday plane” has been spotted flying towards Washington DC, drawing attention amid heightened international tensions. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft travelling from Omaha, Nebraska, to Camp Springs near the US capital earlier this week.

The aircraft is a Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, designed to act as a mobile command centre for the US president and senior military leaders during major emergencies. The US Air Force operates a fleet of four such planes, with at least one kept on constant alert.

According to the US Air Force, the Nightwatch can be used if ground-based command centres are destroyed. It allows national leaders to direct military forces, issue emergency orders, and coordinate with civilian authorities in extreme situations, including nuclear conflict.

The plane’s recent movements are not believed to be linked to any immediate crisis. Military analysts note that the aircraft is regularly flown to keep crews trained and systems operational, as it would be of little use if only deployed during emergencies.

The E-4B can remain airborne for up to a week through mid-air refuelling and is equipped to withstand electromagnetic attacks. Its systems rely heavily on analogue controls, reducing the risk of cyber interference.

The aircraft is among the most expensive in the US military to operate and is usually based near US Strategic Command in Nebraska. While its presence can appear alarming, officials say routine flights are a normal part of maintaining readiness.
