Headteacher Opens Up After Jail for Spanner Attack Over Love Triangle

Dr Anthony John Felton

Dr Anthony John Felton, a former headteacher from South Wales, has spoken publicly for the first time since being released from prison for attacking his deputy with a spanner.

Felton, 54, had been headteacher at St Joseph’s Catholic School in Port Talbot since 2023. He had been having an affair with a member of staff and fathered a child with her, despite his wife also working at the school.

In March 2025, Felton became convinced his deputy, Richard Pyke, was involved with the same woman. He lured Pyke into his office and struck him multiple times with a spanner, shouting accusations. Pyke suffered swelling, headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

Felton was sentenced to two years and four months in prison but served just six months, being released on tag in August 2025.

In an interview with Inside Time, Felton expressed deep shame for his actions. He spoke about losing his career and trust, but also about forming friendships and witnessing kindness during his time in HMP Swansea.

He said adjusting to life outside prison has been difficult, but he is determined to move forward and give back to his family, friends, and society.

During sentencing, the judge highlighted the severe emotional and professional impact on Pyke, describing the assault as a cruel ambush by someone he considered a friend.
