Miley Cyrus has claimed she was fired from the animated film Hotel Transylvania after giving her then-boyfriend an adult-themed birthday cake.
Cyrus, who rose to fame as the star of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, said she bought a penis-shaped cake for Liam Hemsworth’s birthday when she was 18. The images of the cake were later published online after her camera was stolen at a private party.
“I, as a joke, got my boyfriend a penis cake for his birthday and I got fired,” Cyrus said during an interview with Monica Lewinsky on the podcast Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky. “I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania and they fired me and replaced me because I made an inappropriate adult joke. But I was 18.”
The publication of the images led to Cyrus being replaced by Selena Gomez, who went on to voice Mavis Dracula in the three Hotel Transylvania sequels.
Cyrus said she felt the punishment was unfair, noting that similar cakes are commonly sold for bachelorette parties. “It’s not that big of a deal. I thought this was a very simple, not vulgar joke… this is silly,” she said.
The singer, who celebrates her 33rd birthday today, reflected on her past and the challenges of growing up in the public eye.
