Jessica Simpson, the fashion mogul and musician, says her style has changed over the years. The 45-year-old mother of three told PEOPLE that she now dresses for herself rather than for attention from others.
“Whereas my younger self used to dress for guys, or for other girls to compliment me, or for attention, I definitely dress for myself now,” Simpson said. She added that she feels confident even in simple outfits like a white tank top and shorts or leather pants.
Simpson shared that she enjoys wearing bold pieces, such as men’s suit jackets, which she finds “sexy” and playful. She described herself as a maximalist when it comes to jewelry, following the style of her mother, Tina Simpson, who often layers multiple bracelets.
The singer and entrepreneur reflected on her fashion career, which began with a pair of red cowboy boots that helped launch the Jessica Simpson Collection. The brand is now celebrating its 20th anniversary. Simpson said the collection is a personal reflection of her life and remains focused on staying “real and relatable.”
After her recent split from Eric Johnson, her husband of ten years, Simpson is embracing her independence. She is touring again with new music and continuing to expand her fashion brand. She noted that her iconic Daisy Dukes remain a staple in her wardrobe, highlighting a new Walmart capsule collection inspired by her “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” video.
“I wear life with more confidence,” Simpson said. “I feel better now than I ever did in my twenties. I think going through life and having all the opinions thrown at you, I’m at the place where only my opinion matters. And of course my kids. I don’t want to embarrass my children!”
