A24 is developing a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring, with director Alex Garland set to write and direct.
Garland, known for Ex Machina and Civil War, secured the project after presenting a 160-page script draft and 40 pages of visual references directly to Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki in Japan, according to The New Yorker.
The pitch received Miyazaki’s approval, giving the green light for the adaptation of FromSoftware’s bestselling 2022 action role-playing game.
The game, co-created by Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, becoming Bandai Namco’s fastest-selling title.
Martin is attached as a producer on the film, alongside Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis, though his role is expected to be limited due to other projects.
Details about the movie’s storyline remain unclear. It is not yet confirmed whether the film will directly adapt the game’s fragmented narrative, tell a new story within the Lands Between, or follow events after the game.
Casting rumors include Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), though A24 has not announced any official casting or production timeline. The studio has described the project as one of its most secretive.
Garland, who has said he finished the game seven times, has spoken publicly about his admiration for its design, calling Malenia the toughest boss in a June 2025 interview with IGN.
A24 is aiming to bring the game’s epic fantasy scale and haunting atmosphere to film, supported by Garland’s long-standing passion for the material.
