Russia has rejected European proposals to send troops to Ukraine after a possible peace deal, calling the idea “foreign intervention” and “absolutely unacceptable.”
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia must be included in any talks on Ukraine’s security. He warned that leaving Moscow out would make future agreements “pointless.”
Russia Demands a Role in Security Plans
Lavrov argued that Russia, along with China, should help guarantee Ukraine’s security together with the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. This would give Moscow influence over whether Western troops could operate in Ukraine.
NATO and Western Options
NATO and Western countries are discussing long-term security for Ukraine. Proposals include defense guarantees or a multinational peacekeeping force once a ceasefire or peace settlement is reached. NATO defense chiefs held a virtual meeting this week to review these options.
Peace Efforts Face New Tensions
Lavrov’s warning deepens the divide between Russia and the West. While the U.S. and allies prepare security plans, Russia’s demand for veto power adds new obstacles to peace efforts. Analysts say this disagreement could slow or block future negotiations.
