China, Russia, and India are in serious talks to revive the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral cooperation platform, according to statements made by Russian and Chinese officials on August 1, 2025. The goal is to increase collaboration on economic, diplomatic, and security matters among the three nations.
The RIC concept was first introduced in the late 1990s by former Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov. It aimed to promote a more balanced world order by strengthening ties between three major Eurasian countries. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko confirmed the talks, saying the countries are “important partners” and co-founders of groups like BRICS.
China also voiced strong support. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the cooperation would support peace and stability both regionally and globally.
India, however, responded more cautiously. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India would consider reviving RIC “in a mutually convenient manner” but gave no specific timeline. Ongoing tensions between India and China, especially over border disputes since 2020, have slowed RIC efforts in recent years. Still, recent progress in easing those tensions may help restart the dialogue.
The renewed interest in RIC comes as the global political landscape shifts. All three countries have faced strained relations with the United States, especially under President Donald Trump’s renewed “America First” trade policies.
Analysts believe a stronger RIC alliance could reduce U.S. influence in international affairs, particularly if the three nations work together in global forums like BRICS or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
However, challenges remain. India’s partnerships with the U.S. and other Quad countries may limit its commitment to RIC. Ongoing India-China disagreements and different economic goals also present hurdles.
Despite these issues, the renewed RIC discussions suggest possible changes in global alliances and a move toward a more multipolar world order.
