Team Fortress 2 (TF2) has climbed the Steam top sellers chart again, nearly 18 years after its original release. The recent boost comes after a July 24 update that added a variety of new content made by the game’s community.
The update introduced 10 new maps, 23 new items, four new taunts, and 14 new Unusual effects—half for hats and half for taunts. Alongside these additions, Valve also applied general fixes and balance improvements.
This community-driven update helped TF2 jump into the top 10 on Steam’s top sellers list for a few days and it currently holds a spot in the top 20.
Valve had earlier called for community submissions for a “much-needed update” scheduled for August 27. They also hinted at a second major update planned for around Halloween. The July update serves as a smaller preview, encouraging players to send in more creations for the upcoming releases.
Additionally, on July 26, Valve issued a smaller update that reversed a previous change to one of the new taunts, Texan Trickshot. The taunt’s range had been shortened but was restored to its original length after player feedback.
The summer event, running through September 15, offers special Summer 2025 Unusual effects on cosmetic and taunt cases purchased in the Mann Co. Store, excluding crates.
Thanks to this update and community engagement, Team Fortress 2 proved that it still has a strong player base and remains a popular title on Steam, despite its age.
