A new unauthorized biography promises an unfiltered look into the life of actress and wellness mogul Gwyneth Paltrow. Titled simply Gwyneth, the book was written by journalist Amy Odell, who previously penned the acclaimed biography Anna about Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Based on over 220 interviews with friends, colleagues, and insiders, the biography dives deep into Paltrow’s relationships, career milestones, and controversial moments. Paltrow did not participate in the book and has not endorsed it.
Revealing the Truth Behind Her Famous Relationships
One of the most discussed topics in the book is Paltrow’s high-profile relationships. It explores her breakup with actor Ben Affleck, revealing that while she praised their sex life, their relationship was reportedly troubled by his “self-destructive impulses,” possibly including cheating. After the split, Paltrow reportedly said, “I love men, even though they’re lying, cheating scumbags.”
The book also revisits her relationship with Brad Pitt. Although she once called him “too good” for her, Paltrow allegedly told a friend he was “dumber than a sack of s—.” The biography claims their breakup in 1997 may have involved cheating on her part while filming Sliding Doors.
Oscar Win Controversy
The book revisits the backlash surrounding Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar win for Shakespeare in Love. At the time, rumors swirled that she had taken the role from Winona Ryder by stealing the script off her coffee table — a claim Paltrow has always denied. Producer Harvey Weinstein backed her version, stating Ryder was never officially offered the role.
Friendship Fallout with Madonna
The biography also sheds light on the sudden end of Paltrow’s friendship with Madonna. The two were once close, often vacationing together and attending Kabbalah classes. But things allegedly fell apart when Madonna unexpectedly joined Paltrow and her then-husband Chris Martin on a vacation and behaved poorly at dinner. According to the book, Martin called Madonna “awful,” and Paltrow agreed she was “toxic.”
Other Reveals
The book also mentions that Paltrow once had a crush on British actor Hugh Grant while dating Brad Pitt. She reportedly felt out of place in Pitt’s world, citing their very different upbringings.
