Apple TV+ programming chief Matt Cherniss has confirmed that Severance season 3 is moving toward setting a production start date, though no specific timeline has been established yet.
Speaking to Variety following the show’s strong Emmy nominations performance, Cherniss said the team is working “as quickly as they can” but emphasized the importance of maintaining quality.
“When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance‘ has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time,” he explained.
The executive ruled out another three-year gap between seasons, stating: “No one wants it to be another three year gap.” However, he confirmed that production has not yet received a firm start date, though the show is “moving in that direction.”
Severance recently led Apple TV+ to its biggest Emmy nominations year ever, with the psychological thriller receiving the most nominations of any show across all streaming platforms.
The show’s second season premiered in January 2025 after a three-year gap following the first season’s debut in 2022. Director Ben Stiller had previously indicated that such lengthy delays would not happen again.
Despite the progress update, viewers will likely need to wait until late 2026 at the earliest for season 3, with 2027 being a more realistic target date given typical production timelines.
The workplace thriller, which follows employees who undergo a procedure to separate their work and personal memories, has become one of Apple TV+’s flagship series alongside hits like Ted Lasso and The Morning Show.
