Apple to Launch AirTag 2 This Fall with Major Upgrades

Apple is preparing to release a new version of its popular item tracker later this year. The AirTag 2 is expected to include several important upgrades, according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The original AirTag, first launched in 2021, allows users to track lost items like keys, wallets, and luggage. While the product has been widely used, it has also faced criticism over privacy concerns, including cases of misuse for stalking.

Key Features of AirTag 2

AirTag 2 will introduce a next-generation ultra-wideband chip, first seen in the iPhone 15 lineup. This upgrade will reportedly triple the Precision Finding range—from about 30 meters to 90 meters. The improved range will make it easier for users to locate lost items from farther away using their iPhones.

In addition to range improvements, Apple is said to be placing a stronger focus on privacy. Reports suggest that AirTag 2 will include new features designed to prevent misuse, especially cases where trackers are secretly placed on people without their knowledge. In the past, some individuals have removed the built-in speaker from AirTags to avoid detection, making it harder for victims to find the device. Apple aims to address such issues with the new model.

Release Timeline

The AirTag 2 was initially rumored for a May or June release. However, that timeline has passed. The device is now expected to be unveiled at Apple’s September event, alongside the new iPhone 17 lineup.

Current AirTag Discounts

While waiting for AirTag 2, consumers can purchase the current version of AirTag at a discounted rate. A four-pack is currently available for $64.99, bringing the price per AirTag down to $16—compared to the usual $29 per device.

Apple also offers accessories like a waterproof case with a 10-year battery, allowing for more rugged use of AirTags. A four-pack of these cases is priced at $45.
