DC and Warner Bros’ latest film Superman, directed by James Gunn, is expected to earn more than $210 million globally in its opening weekend. The film has already collected $96.5 million worldwide by Friday, with more earnings anticipated over Saturday and Sunday.
The movie, starring David Corenswet as Superman, added $21.5 million from 78 international markets on Friday alone, bringing its overseas total to $40 million. Although the film is performing well overall, it is showing weaker numbers in Asia, especially in China and Korea.
In the UK, Superman had a strong start with a $3.6 million opening on Friday, capturing 66% of the market and topping local box office charts. Mexico led the pack globally with $3.8 million, followed by the UK, Brazil ($3 million), Australia ($2.5 million), and France ($2.5 million).
In China, the film opened to $2.4 million but is expected to reach just over $11 million in total — a modest result, as expected. Meanwhile, Spain saw a $1 million debut, marking the best opening for a James Gunn film there and beating past DC titles like Justice League, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman.
Other notable openings include Japan ($781K), Korea ($1.7M), Italy ($519K), and the Philippines ($386K). In most of these regions, the film debuted at number one and outperformed earlier DC and Marvel titles.
The domestic box office is showing strong support for this new take on the Man of Steel, with $22.5 million earned from Thursday night previews alone.
Despite some softer spots in Asia, Superman is off to a promising start, with final weekend numbers expected to confirm its strong global appeal.
