Michigan Teacher Arrested After Coworker Reports Sexual Relationship with Student

A former Michigan teacher faces serious criminal charges after having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student and telling a coworker about it.

Jocelyn Sanroman, 26, of Pontiac, worked as a teacher at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township. Police say she had sex with a male student in 2023 while she was his teacher.

Sanroman made a critical mistake when she told another teacher about the relationship. That coworker reported the information to police, leading to her arrest.

Criminal Charges Filed

Prosecutors charged Sanroman with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Each charge carries up to 15 years in prison if she is convicted.

The charges stem from Michigan law that makes it illegal for school employees to have sexual relationships with students aged 16 or 17. The law treats these cases as criminal sexual conduct even if the student consents. This is because teachers hold positions of authority over students.

Breach of Trust

Prosecutors said Sanroman abused her position of power over a minor. They called it a serious breach of the trust that communities place in their educators.

“This represents a fundamental violation of the responsibility teachers have to protect and educate their students,” prosecutors stated.

Legal Context

Michigan specifically prohibits sexual contact between school staff and students aged 16 or 17. The state recognizes that the authority imbalance between teachers and students makes true consent impossible in these situations.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about inappropriate relationships between educators and students across the country.

Sanroman’s case is still working its way through the court system. If convicted on all charges, she could face up to 45 years in prison.
