The Social Network

The Social Network 2 Officially in Development With Aaron Sorkin Returning as Director

Sony Pictures has confirmed that The Social Network Part II is now in development. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the first film, is returning not just as the writer but also as the director. This time, the story will focus on Facebook’s recent controversies and its impact on society.

The sequel is inspired by The Facebook Files, a 2021 investigative series by The Wall Street Journal. These reports exposed serious problems inside Facebook, including how the platform prioritized profits over safety and played a role in real-world harm.

Sorkin is replacing David Fincher, who directed the 2010 original. However, this new film will not be a direct follow-up. Instead, it is a thematic continuation. The first movie showed how Facebook was created and how it affected Mark Zuckerberg’s personal and professional life. The new movie will explore how Facebook has affected the world at large.

Key topics will include:

  • Facebook’s role in spreading division through its algorithm
  • Its influence on political events, including the January 6 Capitol riot
  • The company’s focus on growth over ethical concerns

Sorkin is producing the film with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. No casting news has been announced yet, so it’s unclear if Jesse Eisenberg (who played Zuckerberg) or Andrew Garfield will return.

This marks Aaron Sorkin’s first directing project since 2021. Fans and critics are excited, especially given the lasting impact of the original movie and the growing discussion around Big Tech and social media ethics.
