Eric Dane, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, spoke emotionally about his recent diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) during an interview on Good Morning America. The 52-year-old actor revealed that he now only has “one functioning arm.”
“My left side is functioning, but my right side has completely stopped working,” Dane said. He also shared that his left arm is weakening, and he fears he may lose function there soon. “It’s sobering,” he added.
Dane was diagnosed in April after nine months of medical tests. He first noticed symptoms about a year and a half ago when his right hand started feeling weak. At first, he thought it was from fatigue or texting too much. After seeing several specialists, doctors confirmed the diagnosis.
ALS is a serious and progressive disease that damages nerves, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. It affects movement, speech, and breathing, and currently has no cure.
Dane became emotional talking about the support he receives from his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. “She is probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter,” he said.
Though Dane can still walk, he shared a frightening experience snorkeling with his daughter when he became too weak to swim and had to be rescued by her. “I was breaking down in tears,” he said.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane remains determined. He is returning for Euphoria Season 3 and is involved in the new Amazon Prime series Countdown, which premieres on June 25. “In my heart, I don’t feel like this is the end for me,” he said. “I’m fighting as much as I can.”
Dane also spoke about his anger toward the diagnosis, especially since he lost his father at a young age. “I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and now there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls when they’re very young,” he said.
He emphasized that while he understands his physical limits, he is still ready to work and act in roles he can manage.
