James Gunn Says It’s Healthy Not to Have Everyone Support His Superman Film

Director James Gunn, who is directing the new Superman movie and co-CEO of DC Studios, says he does not expect everyone to cheer for him or his film. He believes having some opposition is actually good. Gunn explained that having critics helps keep balance and makes the creative process healthier.

He noted that even when trailers get very positive reactions—around 97 to 98 percent—there will always be some controversy or criticism. Gunn warned against focusing too much on negative feedback. He shared a story about an actor in the Superman cast who gets upset reading online negativity. Gunn said dwelling on such criticism can hurt a person’s spirit.

Gunn also talked about how he has grown as a filmmaker. Early in his career, he might have mocked Superman and was not ready to handle the character well. But after being fired from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and receiving strong support from fans, he changed. This experience helped him stop trying to please everyone and instead create from a place of confidence.

Because of this, Gunn is bringing a new, more emotional and vulnerable side to Superman, instead of making him a perfect, unbeatable hero.

In summary, James Gunn welcomes having some people disagree with his vision. He sees opposition and controversy as part of making art and connecting with audiences. He also wants to show a deeper, more human Superman in his new film.
