Google CEO Sundar Pichai has openly challenged competitors like OpenAI and Perplexity, emphasizing Google’s commitment to sending users back to websites. This comes amid concerns from news publishers that Google’s new AI-powered feature, AI Overviews, is reducing traffic to their sites.
In an interview with The Verge, Pichai addressed worries that AI Overviews and the upcoming AI Mode, which provide quick summaries at the top of search results, might hurt website visits. He assured that AI Mode will include source links because “people come to Google to explore the web and choose their path.”
While admitting that some individual publishers may see changes in traffic, Pichai said the overall trend shows growth. He also rejected claims from Apple’s Eddy Cue about declining Safari search usage.
Pichai issued a clear challenge to newer AI companies, saying, “More than any other company, we prioritize sending traffic to the web. No one does it like we do.” His remarks appeared to take aim at Perplexity and OpenAI, who have been less focused on driving web traffic.
Earlier this year, Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas noted in a Reddit AMA that Google’s slow AI shift gave companies like Perplexity room to grow. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has also acknowledged the challenge of competing with Google, despite ChatGPT gaining popularity.
As AI-powered search tools evolve, Google is staking its claim as the leader in combining AI with directing users to the broader web.
