Cyberpunk 2 Might Not Work on PS5 or Xbox Series X

CD Projekt Red has officially begun pre-production on Cyberpunk 2, but fans are concerned the game may not be compatible with current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The game—currently titled Cyberpunk 2, previously known under codename Project Orion—is expected to remain in development for several years, possibly targeting a 2030 release.

That long timeline has sparked speculation that the sequel could be designed exclusively for next-generation consoles, potentially leaving behind millions of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners. Combined, these consoles have sold over 100 million units globally.

Fans remember all too well the catastrophic launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020. Released on both last-gen and current-gen systems, it suffered from massive technical issues, especially on the PS4 and Xbox One. The backlash was so severe the game was even temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store.

Many now believe CD Projekt Red won’t risk history repeating itself.

“We don’t want a repeat of 2077,” one Reddit user posted. “Don’t try to run 2030 games on 2020 consoles.”

“They better focus on the next-gen hardware from the start,” added another.

While nothing is confirmed yet, fans expect Cyberpunk 2 will be optimised for future consoles, like the rumored PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox, which could launch within the next few years.

If that happens, millions of current-gen players may be forced to upgrade—or risk being left out of one of gaming’s most anticipated sequels.
